Southampton is to become one of the first local authorities in the country to have a gating order on a footbridge. The move will close the bridge over the M271 at Old Redbridge for a initial period of 12 months.

Commenting on the decision, Cllr Steve Sollitt, Liberal Democrat Campaigner for Southampton Test said "The issue of anti social behaviour has been a problem in this area for a number of years and the gating order on the bridge should reduce problems in Old Redbridge. The area Will be monitored and the decision to gate the bridge will be reviewed in a year"

The footbridge has seen a number of brick throwing attacks on local traffic.
